Rain Continues in Tamil Nadu, Low Pressure Area Persists

Commuters had a harrowing time due to delayed services of buses and trainsand severe traffic snarls.The Rains continued to lash the Chennai City and the neighboring districtsof Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur besides other regions of Tamil Nadu, even asthe MeT Department forecast more rainfall due to a low-pressure areapersisting in the Bay of Bengal.

Schools and colleges, closed since October 31, were shut on Saturday aswell and several university exams were postponed. The state-level NationalTalent Search Exam scheduled for Saturday was deferred to November 18.

The Civic authorities, including the corporation officials, districtcollectors (Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur) coordinated the relief work.

The power supply was suspended in inundated areas such as parts of MKBNagar in North Chennai, pockets of Madipakkam in South Chennai andKarapakkam off Porur in Western Chennai to ensure safety.

Netizens posted updates about traffic diversions and inundated areas on thesocial media networks and volunteers distributed food packets and water inaffected areas of Nanmangalam and Pallikaranai.T.N. Chief Minister Edapadi K Palaniswami had on Friday visited manywaterlogged parts of the city and its suburbs, insisting that hisgovernment is working on a “war-footing”.

He was accompanied by his DeputyChief Minister O Panneerselvam and senior officials.In the Meanwhile, a MeT bulletin said the low-pressure area over thesouth-west Bay of Bengal, adjoining Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu Coast and theassociated cyclonic circulation extending up to 3.1 km above mean sea levelcontinued to persist.

With the northeast monsoon active in the state of Tamil Nadu andneighboring Puducherry, the Chennai City (Nungambakkam) recorded 65.8 mm ofrainfall while suburban Meenambakkam registered 62 mm rains in 24 hoursending 8.30 am on Saturday.

The Coastal District of Nagapattinam in the Cauvery delta zone recorded 2cm rain and Karaikal in Puducherry one cm rain from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm onFriday.

Comprehensive updates on rainfall for other regions till Saturdaymorning are awaited.The Met Department said that rain or thundershowers are likely to occur atmany places over the coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry and at a few placesover interior Tamil Nadu.

Heavy rain at isolated places was very likelyover Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, it said.
